It is a privilege when someone buys a painting. When someone completes the work by making their connection with it and ownership transfers from the artist to the new owner or some would say, custodian.
For me, it is especially true and more so when someone else begins the story and I build a connection through listening to all they can tell me and then paint from this in my own way, creating a piece of work that captures something, the essence of all they speak of.
In practical terms, prospective clients have already decided that there is something they relate well to in the way that I paint - they have seen my work in person or on my website, or have read my book.
They may have a special place, a moment or a memory and they want to catch this in a painting.
Through email or a meeting, we talk about the reason behind the work, where it will go and the nitty gritty of size and budget.
I then do my work!
When ready, we meet with the painting (on occasions I manage to do two from which clients decide which one) and if it does not work for the client - they walk away with either time for me to develop the work after more discussion or, with what would be a regretful ‘sorry, it hasn’t hit the mark’
As yet, no one has walked away, one day they might but not as yet and I endeavour to keep it so by listening.
I am fortunate enough to have been undertaking commissioned work continuously for 2 years now, alongside independently driven work. The timescale from start to end is usually around 4 to 6 weeks but at times it may be up to 3 months.
Payment is on collection and only if completely happy!
